Series consists of correspondence and reports dealing with members of the MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion. Also included are approximately 600 photocopied file cards pertaining to Canadian volunteers which were prepared by the Friends of the MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion. Established on May 20, 1937, the Friends of the MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion served as a support group for Canadian volunteers in Spain. It provided a liaison between the men and their families in Canada and forwarded contributions of money, clothing, and foodstuffs overseas. The group also helped wounded or disabled veterans and eventually became involved in the repatriation of survivors. The file cards in this series not only hold biographical information, photographs, and arrival dates for Canadians who served in Spain, but also their departure dates or the date and location when they were reported missing or killed. Photographs attached to the original cards have been transferred to the Documentary Art and Photography Archives.
