This fonds consists of the diverse papers and records of of Robert Stanfield. It comprises speeches, speech notes and press releases prepared by or for Robert Stanfield (1956-1978); the Leader of the Opposition series, including correspondence, memoranda, notes and reports (1963-1976); a number of series of general correspondence with Canadians from across the whole of the country on diverse subjects (1966-1980); various series on Government, House of Commons and the Progressive Conservative Party (1967-1980); and various other series, such as Desk Diaries, Constitutional Files and Office of Joe Clark, his executive assistant (1967-1978). The fonds also includes photographs related to Stanfield's political career, 1967-1975 and a head and shoulders portrait of Stanfield against a map of Eastern Canada, 1969. Also included are audio and video recordings of speeches and other events related to Stanfield's career, 1960-1979, as well as the documentary ROBERT LORNE STANFIELD : A VALEDICTORY.

Stanfield, Robert L. (Robert Lorne), 1914-2003 : Robert Lorne Stanfield was born on 11 April 1914 at Truro, Nova Scotia. He was educated at Colchester Academy, Truro; Ashbury College, Ottawa; Dalhousie University (B.A.) and Harvard University (LL.B.). Robert Stanfield was elected leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia in 1948, first elected to the Nova Scotia Legislature in the general election of 1949 and was re-elected in 1953, 1956, 1960, 1963 and 1967. He served as Premier and Minister of Education from November 1956 until his resignation on 13 September 1967. He was elected leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, 9 September 1967 and was first elected to the House of Commons on 6 November 1967 in a by-election. He was re-elected in 1968, 1972 and 1974. He served as official Leader of the Opposition from 15 November 1967 until 22 February 1975. Robert Stanfield was not a candidate in the general election of 1979. He left politics and settled in Ottawa, where he resided until his death in 2003.
