Collection consists of historical materials collected by the Reverend Dr. Andrew Brown (d. 1834), together with the rough draft of his projected history of Nova Scotia for which they were collected. The papers are annotated in the hand of the Reverend Dr. Andrew Brown himself and in that of Alexander Balloch Grosart. A number of the documents are in French.

The Reverend Dr. Andrew Brown (d. 1834) was a native of Biggar in Lanarkshire, Scotland. After graduation from the University of Edinburgh, he was ordained by the Presbytery of Biggar and came out to Nova Scotia in the middle of 1787. There he served as minister of St. Matthew's Presbyterian Church, Halifax, for eight years, from 1787 to 1795, when he returned to Scotland. He afterwards served as minister of Lochmaben in Dumfriesshire, until his translation to New Greyfriars Church, Edinburgh, from which he was promoted to the Old Church in the same city. In 1801, he succeeded Hugh Blair as Professor of Rhetoric and Belles-Lettres at the University of Edinburgh. In 1813, he became Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He died in 1834.
Mascarene, Paul, 1684-1760 : Jean-Paul Mascarene was the son of a Huguenot, Jean Mascarene, and Margaret de Salavy. He was born in 1684 or 1685 in the province of Languedoc, France. In 1696 he escaped to Geneva, where he was educated, and was naturalized around 1706 in England, where he embarked upon a military career. He served in the British Army from 1708 to 1758. He assisted in the capture of Port Royal in 1710 and thereafter served mainly in Nova Scotia. From 1740 to 1749, he acted as governor of Nova Scotia and defended Annapolis against Du Vivier in 1744. In 1758, he retired from active service with the rank of major-general, and died at Boston, Massachusetts, 22 January 1760.
