The fonds illustrates the life and career of members of the Beaubien familiy, land owners, financiers and politicians, and prominent figures of French Canadian Montreal bourgeoisie in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Fonds is especially rich documenting the lives of Louis Beaubien (1837-1915), Charles-Philippe Beaubien (1870-1949), Joseph Beaubien (1865-1949) and Louis-Philippe Beaubien (1903-1985).

Photographic material depicts the family of Louis Beaubien; portrait of Louis Beaubien, 1913; portraits of Joseph Beeaubien, Outremont mayor; portraits of Charles-Philippe Beaubien at different times, and opening of the Quebec Bridge, 1916.

Fonds also consists of 57 plans: 2 plans of the Louis-Beaubien house in Outremont from architects I. W. and C. C. Hopkins; 4 plans of the Louis Beaubien barn in Outremont; and 51 surveying plans related to the landed estate of Beaubien family in Montréal.

Also included in this fonds are twenty nine commemorative medals and/or medal plaquettes acquired by or presented to Senator Charles-Philippe Beaubien, between 1891 and 1937. The medals, for the most part, are representative of Senator's Beaubien's travels abroad, either in a private or official capacity, to promote a greater economic, scientific and cultural interaction between Canada and the United States and various European countries. There is also one metal corporate seal stamping apparatus with matrix, used by the Beaubien Company Limited of Montreal.

Biography/Administrative history:

Beaubien, Louis, 1837-1915 : Louis Beaubien, member of Parliament, was born in Montreal. He was associated with a number of colonization railways and the Banque Provinciale, as well as being president of the Hochelaga Agricultural Society. He was a member of the Quebec legislature, 1867-1886, 1892-1897, and served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, 1876-1878, and Minister of Agriculture and Colonization, 1891-1897. He was also the Conservative federal member representing Hochelaga, 1872-1874.

Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott (1821-1893) was a member of Parliament representing Argenteuil, 1857-1887. As legal advisor to Sir Hugh Allen, he was implicated in the Pacific Scandal of 1873.
