Bercovitch, Peter, 1879-1942 : Peter Bercovitch was born in 1879 at Montreal, Que., the son of Hyam Bercovitch and Fannie Goldberg. He received his education from McGill University, B.C.L., and the University of Montreal, L.L.M. He was called to the Quebec Bar in 1901, practised law at Montreal, eventually became a senior partner of the firm Bercovitch, Cohen and Spector, and appointed King's Counsel in 1911. He represented Montreal-St. Louis in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1916-1938, and was a Member of Parliament representing Cartier, Montreal from 1938 until 1942.

During the course of his career Bercovitch defended the interests of the Jewish community in Quebec. Bercovitch and Louis St. Laurent represented the Jewish community throughout the lengthy court proceedings in the Protestant-Jewish School Question case. In 1932 he introduced a Bill into the Assembly which would have stopped the spread of printed defamation of religous groups by way of injunction. He opposed an amendment to the Lord's Day Act which would have removed a section of the Act which enabled Jews to work on Sunday.
