The fonds consists of subject files including biographical and genealogical information; diaries; diary correspondence and memoranda. The photographic material includes pictures of the Ross vs. Hodgson family golf match, Ottawa, Ontario, 1925; visit of Mr. and Mrs. Ross to Istanbul, Turkey; and Ross in his office. It also includes photographs by Graphic Artists Photography, Toronto, depicting the induction of Philip Dansken Ross into the Hockey Hall of Fame, August 26, 1976.

Ross, Philip Dansken, 1858-1949 : Philip D. Ross, journalist and publisher, was born in Montreal and received his B.Sc. in engineering from McGill University, 1878. He joined the Montreal Star in 1879 as a reporter, becoming city editor in six months. In 1882 he became sports editor of the Toronto Mail. In 1883 he was appointed assistant editor of the Toronto News and in 1885 he rejoined the Montreal Star as managing editor. In 1886 he was made the Montreal Star's man in the Parliamentary Press Gallery. In the same year he bought a half interest in the Ottawa Journal from A.S. Woodburn purchasing the remaining half in 1891. He amalgamated with E. Norman Smith's Ottawa Free Press in 1917.

P.D. Ross was elected an Ottawa alderman in 1902. In 1905 he and Mayor Ellis established a civic electric plant, Ottawa Hydro. Ross sat on the Board of the Ottawa Hydro Electric Commission until 1934 and in 1944-1949. He was president of the Ottawa Conservation Association, 1908, 1928-1929. He was named Head of the Ontario Royal Commission on Public Welfare, 1930. Ross was also active in sports such as rugby, rowing, lacrosse, hockey and golf. In 1893, Lord Stanley appointed him one of the first two trustees of the Stanley Cup, a post he held until 1949. He published his personal reminiscences as Retrospects of a Newspaper Personal (1931).

General note:

Textual material was received in 1979 from I. Norman Smith of Rockcliffe Park, Ontario, with the exception of one letter, 1903, from Sir John Willison, which was was received in 1969 from the Carleton University Library through Professor Richard Clippingdale of Ottawa, Ontario.
Photographs were received from I. Norman Smith and Mrs. Howard I. Ross of Westmount, Québec.
