Fonds consists of dedicatory letters to the King and the Archbishop of Canterbury (4 pages) preface the text entitled "An Essay towards bringing the... Mickmack language to be learnt grammatically" (76 pages). Dated in June, this text bears evidence of on-going corrections. The last page describes this text as the first volume, but no second volume is known to have been produced.

Wood, Thomas, 1711-1778 : Thomas Wood (1711-1778) was a native of New Jersey. After practising medicine for some years, he was appointed a surgeon to the Louisbourg campaign under Sir William Shirley in 1746 and served until 1748. After his ordination as a priest in the Anglican church the next year, he returned to New Jersey to serve as a missionary. In 1752 he transferred to Nova Scotia, where he served under the auspices of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPGFP). Appointed chaplain to the garrison at Fort Cumberland in 1755 and to the House of Assembly in 1759, he moved to Annapolis Royal in 1764 and remained there until his death.

A linguist able to preach in French and German as well as English, he studied the Micmac (now known as the Mi'kmaq or Mi'gmaq) language with the Abbé Pierre Maillard (who had been a missionary to the Acadians and Mi'kmaq People, 1735-1762) and began to compile a grammar, with the assistance of Jean-Baptiste Roma, formerly a servant of Maillard. He reported completion of the first volume to the SPGFP in September 1766, but the fate of the projected second volume is unknown.
