Collection consists of proceedings of Deputy Commissary General Butler's court martial, 8-9 June 1810, held at Halifax, 36 pages; and a parchment indenture of release by the heirs of John Butler Butler to the trustees for the sale of the Butler estate in Nova Scotia, 1841, 6 pages.

Butler, John Butler, 1760?-1834 : John Butler Butler (Dight) was born ca. 1760 in England. He was the son of Joshua Dight and Elizabeth Butler. In 1773 Dight moved to Nova Scotia, later obtaining a position in the commissariat at Fort Cumberland with the help of his uncle, John Butler. At the end of the 1770s Dight moved to Halifax, setting up as a gerneral merchant and succeeding his uncle as agent victualler to the troops in N.S. and Newfoundland. Over the next decade Dight served as a captain in the local militia, a vestryman, and town magistrate. On 21 June 1788 he married Melinda Burgess Morden. The couple was to have 2 boys and 5 daughters. Between 1785 and 1793 Dight held a house of Assembly seat for Cumberland County. In 1791 John Butler died having named Dight beneficiary of his estate. On the condition that Dight adopt the surname Butler, Dight acquired land in England, Halifax and Hants County, and an invitation to enter Nova Scotia's Council. This appointment was deferred by Dight-Butler. In 1799 Bulter was appointed as deputy commissary general for all of eastern British North America. In 1804 Butler returned to Halifax, and to a seat in the Council. Butler left Halifax in 1910 to perform commissariat work for Lord Wellington during his Peninsular campaigns. By the end of the Napoleonic Wars Butler settled in England, spending most of his remaining years in Bath. Butler came to Halifax in 1833 to see his real-estate investments, but although tradition has him spending the next 20 years in active retirement at Martock, he actually died there the following year, 2 July 1834, Windsor, N.S.
