Fonds consists of family papers of Alexander Scott, including letters from relatives in Scotland and India, wills, marriage certificates, burial accounts, land deeds, militia commissions, pew rental deeds, newspapers, 1814-1872. A number of the items relate to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Ottawa, and to the Hon. Thomas McKay (1792-1855), with whose family Scott had marriage, business, and church connections. Subjects of interest include attitudes to emigration, temperance and the clergy reserves. The fonds also contains a photograph of Thomas McKay, builder of Rideau Hall and Earnscliffe, Ottawa, [ca. 1850].

Scott, Alexander, fl. 1831-1858 : Alexander Scott, who lived during the period 1831 to 1858, was a baker who emigrated, ca. 1836, from Perth, Scotland to New Edinburgh, Ontario. He married Alison, daughter of his employer, a flour mill owner, Thomas McKay, who was nephew of the Hon. Thomas McKay, M.L.C., the founder of New Edinburgh. Their daughter, Mary McKay Scott was a well-known journalist and advocate of women's rights in Ottawa.
