Item is a journal kept by Charles Thomas of Bathurst District, Canada West, dated September 1850 to November 1852 (volume 1, 26 folios), including records of weather conditions and activities on Thomas' farm and in the vicinity, as well as many details of his family.

Thomas, Charles, b. 1793 : Charles Thomas (b. 1793) was the son of John Thomas, who was for a time in charge of the Hudson's Bay Company post of Moose Fort. Charles Thomas also had a career with the HBC before establishing a "stopping place", sometimes known as Charlies Hope, on Golden Lake. His marriage to Hannah Mannall in 1824 produced a family of eleven. Ernest Lloyd Lake recorded details of the Thomas family and descendants in "Pioneer Reminiscences of the Upper Ottawa Valley".

General note:

Both the original journal and a typescript copy of the journal were received in 1926 from Mrs. Wilcox of Eganville, Ontario. The typescript copy (volume 2, 205 pages) is presumed to have been prepared by the donor.
