Fonds consists of papers that provide some insight into Mr. Côté's activities as a federal public servant including files relating to United Nations' committees, 1946-1947, bilingualism in the public service, 1963-1967, issues of concern to the Deputy Minister of Northern Affairs, 1964-1967, Veterans Affairs, 1968-1969, and Solicitor-General, 1971-1972 (Volume 1).

Fonds also consists of portraits and group photographs taken between 1879-1905 in Livernois, Quebec.

Côté, Ernest A., 1913-2015 : Ernest Adolphe Côté was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1913, the son of Jean Léon Côté (of Les Éboulements, P.Q.) and Cécile Gagnon Côté (of Québec, P.Q.). He was educated at the Edmonton Jesuit College, Laval University (B.Sc., 1931), and the University of Alberta (LLB., 1938).

Mr. Côté worked in the Alberta Civil Service from 1931 to 1935, was called to the Bar in 1939, entered the Royal 22nd Regiment as a lieutenant in 1939, served five years in the U.K. and northwest Europe, and was discharged as a Colonel in 1945.

He served with External Affairs between 1945 and 1955 in Ottawa, London and at international conferences; he negotiated bilateral water agreements with the U.S. Mr. Côté was Assistant Deputy Minister (1955-1963) and Deputy Minister (1963-1968) of Northern Affairs and National Resources; Deputy Minister (1968-1971) of Veterans Affairs; Deputy Solicitor-General (1971-1972) and served as ambassador to Finland (1972-1975).
