Fonds consists of Desmond Pacey's scholarly, academic and literary papers, with a few personal papers interfiled. There are extensive files of research material and correspondence with many Canadian literary figures. Most of the material dates from 1931 to 1975, the year of Pacey's death. However, there is some earlier material, dating back to 1886, collected as part of Pacey's research into Canadian literature. There is also some posthumous material dating to 1986.

The arrangement follows the order in which the material was received at the National Archives, and includes the following series: Correspondence and research, poets files; Correspondence and research, novelists and others Writers files; Correspondence, Ryerson Press files; Correspondence, scholarly files; Correspondence, English Department files; Manuscripts, creative writing files; Manuscripts, articles and speeches files; Research, Bliss Carman files; Research, Frederick Philip Grove files; Research, Major John Richardson files; Research, Sir Charles G.D. It should be noted that there is considerable overlap between series.

The fonds contains photographs, 1924-1975, depicting the activities of Pacey and his wife, 1935-1975; group photos; portraits of individuals; and photos relating to the life of Frederick Philip Grove.

The fonds also contains Canadian, British, American, and French postal covers, n.d., 1953-1973.

Also included are sound recordings of a talk by Pacey on Leonard Cohen, and an interview by Pacey of Professor Birkenshaw about Canadian author Frederick Philip Grove, [ca. 1970-1975].

Pacey, Desmond, 1917-1975 : Desmond Pacey was born in New Zealand in 1917 and came to Canada in 1931. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Toronto before earning a Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1941. He taught for three years at Brandon College of the University of Manitoba, 1941-1944, and then accepted a position as head of the English Department at the University of New Brunswick, where he remained for the rest of his life. He was appointed dean of graduate studies at the university in 1960 and vice-president (academic) in 1970.

Desmond Pacey was one of Canada's most eminent literary historians, specializing in Canadian literature. His first published work was his 1945 analysis of the Canadian author Frederick Philip Grove, which was followed by other works on Grove and on the Canadian poet Sir Charles G.D. Roberts. In 1952, he published his study "Creative Writing in Canada" and, in 1958, "Ten Canadian Poets". He was a contributing editor of Carl Klinck's "Literary History of Canada" (1965) and was the author of "Essays in Canadian Criticism: 1938-1968" (1969), as well as a study of the Canadian author Ethel Wilson (1967). He compiled a number of anthologies, including "A Book of Canadian Stories" (1947) and "Our Literary Heritage"(1967). He also published two books of children's poems and two collections of his own short stories.

Pacey was awarded honorary degrees from Mount Allison and the University of New Brunswick, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1955. In 1972, the Royal Society awarded him the Lorne Pierce Medal for his distinguished contributions to Canadian literature. He died in 1975.
