Collection consist of correspondence, memorabilia, clippings, notes, diaries, albums and other documents pertaining to the Sanders family, who resided primarily in St. Thomas, Ont. Genealogical studies of the Sanders and related families by Edra Sanders Ferguson. Records of Sanders and Bell/R. Sanders Lumber Limited, a retail lumber company operated by the Sanders family in St. Thomas. 64 photographs (b&w) and 3 photographs (col.), ca. 1880-1960, predominant ca. 1890-1945, are snapshots of various members of the Gould and Sanders families in Canada and England, c. 1910-1960; studio portraits, after ca. 1880, of various members of the Sanders family.

Sanders (family) : Edra Iles Sanders was born in 1907 in St. Thomas, Ontario. After graduating from Alma College in 1927, she studied law at Toronto's Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the bar in 1930. She then joined the St. Thomas law firm of her father, Edgar C. Sanders (1872-1957). In 1935 Edra Sanders became the first woman elected alderman in St. Thomas, and her unsuccessful 1937 bid for that city's mayoralty represented the first such candidacy by a woman in Ontario.

Edra Sanders' non-professional interests included the local Children's Aid Society and Business and Professional Women's Club. In 1940 she married Donald H. Ferguson (1899-1962) and moved to Guelph, Ontario, where her husband was a high-school history teacher. The Fergusons raised two children. Following the death of her husband in 1962 Edra Ferguson moved to Toronto, where she was appointed judge in the Ontario Division Court and in the Juvenile and Family Court. She retired from the bench in 1975 after the death of her second husband, Peter Christopherson.

Edra Sanders Ferguson has an active interest in the history of her family. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Sanders (1847-1933) and Eleanor Jane (Edwards) Sanders (1847-1935), who immigrated to St. Thomas from their native England in c.1871. Richard Sanders was a carpenter by trade. In St. Thomas he worked as a building contractor and was also owner of a lumber firm. Their first child, Edgar C. Sanders, worked as a teacher before studying law and being called to the bar in 1900. He practised in Toronto and during 1903-1904 in Moose Jaw, North West Territories. In 1905 he married Jane K. Iles (1878-1954) of St. Thomas and established a law practice in that city. Edra Iles Sanders was the first of their four children.

The Sanders Family Collection consists of documents gathered together by Edra Sanders Ferguson pertaining to the history of the Sanders and related families in Canada.
Volumes 1 to 4 and the oversize material were acquired in 1985 from Edra Sanders Ferguson, Toronto, Ontario. Volume 5 (R. Sanders Lumber Limited papers) was acquired in 1987 from Andrew Lawrence Sanders, St. Thomas, Ont., through the courtesy of Edra Sanders Ferguson. Photographs were acquired from Edra Sanders Ferguson.
