Fonds consists of a memorandum of conversations with Charles J. Malby concerning the discovery of the Mackenzie River by Alexander Mackenzie; and a bound volume entitled Conservations with Khahtsahlano containing reports of conversations, 1932-1954, between J.S. Matthews and August Jack Khahtsahlano, of the Squamish Nation born in British Columbia in 1877; reports of conversations with C.M. Tate, a Methodist missionary, notes on Indigenous names compiled during the years 1931-1940, and notes on Coast Salish villages and landmarks at Burrard Inlet and Howe Sound compiled during the years 1931-1937. Numerous photographs and maps illustrate the volume.

Fonds also contains 5 photographs of various events and locations predominantly in Vancouver: Georgia Street West, winter 1886-1887; S.S. Ploughboy alongside grain elebator, Collingwood, Ont.; Queen Elizabeth and Dr. Telford, 29 May 1939;Kitsilano Beach, 16 July 1932; freedom of Vancouver being bestowed on Alderman L.A. Hamilton, 10 April 1938.

Matthews, J. S. (James Skitt), 1878-1970 : Major James S. Matthews, born in 1878 at Newton, North Wales immigrated to Canada in 1898. Until 1920, he served with the Imperial Oil Co. Ltd. in B.C., when he established J.S. Matthews and Son Ltd. In 1929 he and his wife created the City of Vancouver Archives. He became City Archivist in 1933, a post he held until his death. He contributed historical articles to journals and newspapers, and authored the four volume manuscript, "Early Vancouver".
