Collection consists of transcripts of accounts of pioneer experiences in the Canadian west from 1870 to 1926 relating primarily to Saskatchewan. Items 1 to 30 were written as entries in a competition sponsored by the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire, Regina, and the Women's Canadian Club, Regina, in 1923 for the five best true stories of pioneer life in Saskatchewan. Items 31 to 73 are copies of accounts of homesteaders' experiences submitted to the grain growers' organ The Grain Growers' Guide, in 1926. (Volumes 1-3).

Most of the writers were immigrants, chiefly from Great Britain, and of these, many were the wives of homesteaders. They describe travels by ocean, rail, and wagon trail; homesteading and farming experiences, prairie fires, social life, wildlife, etc. A few relate to the Barr Colony, notably item no. 28. Many describe Indian customs and activities and the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, particularly items numbered 9, 10, 13, 18, and 41, besides nos. 49-68 mentioned below. They chiefly relate to pioneer life in Saskatchewan but item no. 45 concerns Alberta. Of particular interest are items 49 to 68 inclusive, describing the experiences of a former Hudson's Bay Company clerk, 1870-1892.

Most of the narratives fall between the decade of the 1880s and the first decade of the twentieth century; a few carry the narrators' experiences up to contemporary times. The transcripts have been numbered consecutively.

General note:

Accounts 1-30 were transcribed from originals held by the University of Saskatchewan, and acquired by the National Archives in 1936. Accounts 31-37 were acquired in 1926 from Dr. A.D. Morton. Dr. Morton transcribed accounts which had been submitted to the Grain Growers Guide.
