Godfrey, John Milton, 1871-1942 : John M. Godfrey, lawyer, was born in 1871 at Hastings, Ont., and received his B.A. in 1891, and his L.L.B. in 1893, from the University of Toronto. He became a barrister in 1894, and was a member of the firm Robinette, G. Phelan and Henderson of Toronto. He later became a Justice of the Ontario Supreme Court.

He was president of the Canadian National Service League formed in 1916, to encourage the active prosecution of the war effort and to stimulate recruitment. Godfrey was also one of the principal organizers of the Bonne Entent Movement, established in 1915, for the purpose of improving relations between French and English Canadians. Sir George Garneau was the chairman and Godfrey was the vice-chairman of the Movement.
