Item is a journal kept by William Joseph Christie, Inspecting Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company while on a tour of inspection from Fort Garry to Fort Simpson, 22 August 1872 to 28 January 1873. The journal includes comments on the primitive means of travel and descriptions of prominent Hudson's Bay Company officials, as well as Indians, and missionaries whom he encountered.

Christie, William Joseph, 1854-1861 : William Joseph Christie became Chief Trader with the Hudson's Bay Company at Norway House in 1854. In 1860 he was promoted to Chief Factor and was stationed at Fort Garry. An energetic critic of Company policy, he was appointed Inspecting Chief Factor in 1872 and undertook a tour of inspection from Fort Garry to Fort Simpson which convinced him that the Company's Chief Commissioner, Donald Smith, was guilty of mismanagement. Upon his return he travelled to London to present his case. His name does not appear on the company's list of commissioned officers for the following year.
