Fonds consists of correspondence of Dr. H.T. Gussow, consisting of letters received by him from friends, family members and colleagues, n.d., 1880, 1906-1961, and letters sent by him to family members, 1958-1960. Included are letters received by his son William after Dr. H.T. Gussow's death, n.d., 1961; genealogical notes and a booklet relating to the Gussow family, n.d., 1935; as well as notes, clippings and other material relating to Dr. H.T. Gussow and his work, n.d., 1931, 1936, 1944, 1958, 1961, 1962.

The fonds also contains photographs depicting the life and career of Dr. H.T. Gussow, 1910-1950, including photographs of Dr. Gussow and his wife in London, England, 1907; and Otto Klotz family with Mrs. Gussow, Ottawa, Ont., 1913, photo by J.James Bayfield.

Güssow, H. T. (Hans Theodor), 1879-1961 : Educated in Breslau, Leipzig and Berlin, Dr. Hans Theodor Güssow specialized in botany, with major interests in plant pathology and bacteriology. In 1901 he left his native Germany for England where in 1903 he was appointed as assistant to Dr. William Carruthers, F.R.S., Consulting Botanist to the Agricultural Society of England. In 1907 he married Jenny Maria Hitzigrath and in 1909, on the personal invitation of the Honorable Sidney Fisher, he accepted a position in the Experimental Farms Branch of the Dominion Department of Agriculture.

When in 1909 a division was made between the entomological and the botanical work of the Experimental Farm, Dr. Güssow was placed in charge of the botanical section. Except for a brief period in 1917, he retained this position until his retirement in 1945. Under his supervision as the first Dominion Botanist some twelve laboratories were established to investigate fruit diseases. Other major programs initiated by him included the testing of clover and grass varieties for their adaptability and yield, and of hemp and flax varieties for yield and retting behavior, the preparation and distribution of nitro cultures, and the bacteriological examination of water and milk samples.
