Fonds consists of letters received, 1892-1912, 1.7 m; letterbooks including letterpress copies of letters written by Porteous, his secretary, and officers of the Chambly Manufacturing Company, 1883-1910, 0.45 cm; daily journal consisting of a brief summary of Porteous' business activities for the year 1898, 0.025 cm; and legal and miscellaneous documents consisting of material relating to law suits involving Porteous, personal papers and business items, 1901-1907, 0.15 cm.

Fonds consists of four engineering drawings pertaining to water power projects on the St. Lawrence River at the Lachine Rapids and at the Beauharnois Canal.

Porteous, Charles E.L., 1848-1926 : Charles Porteous began his business career as manager of the Bank of Montreal at Lindsay, Ont., from 1878 to 1890, and at Kingston, Ont., from 1890-1893. He developed considerable investment interests and in 1893 James Ross, a leading Montreal financier, asked him to manage the financial affairs of William Mackenzie, president of the Toronto Street Railway Company. Ross subsequently hired Porteous to manage his own affairs. In 1900 Porteous became president of the Chambly Manufacturing Company acting on behalf of Ross, the major shareholder. This firm, which produced electric power, was re-organized to become the Montreal and St. Lawrence Light and Power Company, with Porteous remaining as president. Later this company was merged into the Montreal Light, Heat and Power Company, headed by Herbert Holt. In 1902 Porteous became president of the Laurie Engine Company.
