John G. Diefenbaker's final efforts to retain the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party in 1967 are documented in this program. Opening scenes show the victorious new leader Robert Stanfield taking the podium after his election. Footage of preparations for the national Progressive Conservative Party leadership convention by President Dalton Camp is juxtaposed with shots of an apparently unconcerned Diefenbaker fishing in various parts of Western Canada. Leadership candidates John MacLean, George Hees, Davie Fulton, Michael Starr, Wallace McCutcheon, Alvin Hamilton, Donald Fleming, Duff Roblin and Stanfield are shown: declaring their candidacy; meeting at Montmorency Falls, Quebec, where they debate the "two nations" issue with Marcel Faribault; and making their opening speeches at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Diefenbaker ("The Chief"), who entered the leadership race at the last minute, is shown making his long-awaited speech, where he attacks the "two-nation" concept. Noteworthy footage of: Dalton Camp being called "Brutus" by a Diefenbaker supporter; Ottawa Mayor Charlotte Whitton vehemently supporting the tabling of the "two-nation" proposal; Olive Diefenbaker and Joyce Stanfield accompanying their husbands; Flora MacDonald, National Secretary of the Progressive Conservative association at work on the Stanfield campaign; Stanfield's victory speech; and Diefenbaker's final farewell. <90mn>
