Original editorial cartoons by the artist Ollie Simpkins (1911-1991), dealing primarily with municipal issues surrounding the city of Sudbury, Ontario. As well cartoons depict provincial, national and international events.

Simpkins, Ollie, 1911-1991 : Cartoonist. Ollie (Simpkins, Oliver A.), (1911-1991). Canadian cartoonist. He was a native of Regina, Saskatchewan who In 1938 hesold his first cartoon to "Maclean's Magazine" and in the same year began contributing to the "Regina Leader Post." He belonged to the Royal Canadian Navy and worked as a naval photographer, and was variously stationed in Halifax, St. John's and the British Isles. After the war his first newspaper job was at the "Timmins Daily Press" in 1946. He then worked for "The Sudbury Star" from 1948 to 1980, and then contributed to "Northern Life" and to the sister publicaton "Northern Ontario Business." The artist was part of a large family of Canadian artists that includes cousins Henry John Simpkins (1906-1995), James Simpkins (1911-2004), and newphew Ron Simpkins.

Custodial history:

The cartoons comprising this fonds were initially offered to the National Archives for purchase in 1989, by the publishers of "Northern Life" and "Northern Ontario Business." Part of this group [80 cartoons] was purchased from the artist himself in 1989 [accession no. 1989-133] . The remainder was sent to the Ontario Archives for consideration for acquisition. They declined to acquire them and they were sent back to the National Archives in 1994. The cartoonist died in 1991, and the contact for the estate was obscured until 2005 - recent contact with a family member allowed the contact to be re-established, and this second portion of 84 cartoons to be acquired. [accession no. R11524-1 to 84].
