Canada under the Liberal government of Prime Minister MacKenzie King as it emerged from the Great Depression (1929) is the subject of this documentary. The depression era is recreated through archival footage, including: drought in Western Canada; grasshopper plagues; the Dionne Quintuplets; Ontario Premier Mitchell Hepburn; Quebec Premier Maurice Duplessis; founder of Canada's Social Credit movement (1932) William Aberhart; a sit-down strike by General Motors of Canada workers; facist marches in Canadian cities; and Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King meeting Adolf Hitler. World events are also depicted, including: Mussolini invading Ethiopia; the Spanish Civil War (1936); a violent confrontation between police and Chicago steelworkers; and Kind Edward VIII abdicating the throne. The political and social climate of the times is reviewed in interviews, including: authors Hugh Garner and James H. Gray; journalists Gordon Sinclair and Tracy Ludington; medical missionary Hazen Sise; "Le Devoir" publisher Gerard Filion; and British senator Lord Robert Boothby. Excerpts of Canadian film character Sergeant Renfrew ("the singing mountie") contrast ironically with footage of Hitler invading Austria (1938) and Czechoslovakia (1939). <60mn>
