Gerald Barry, Editor of the London News Chronicle, gives one of a series of special reports on the Polish crisis from the BBC in London. In this series he alternates with Canadian journalist Graham Spry. Barry explains that British notes to Berlin and Hitler's reply have been kept secret and hence rumors are rampant. He speculates on the positions Britain and Germany are taking. British notes to Berlin and Hitler's reply have been kept secret, so rumours are rampant. The German note was vague, expressing a desire for understanding and peace between Britain and Germany but insisting that the Polish problems of Danzig and the Corridor and other broder disputes must be settled first. Then Germany will be willing to make lasting peace with the British Empire. The British reply, while conciliatory, will insist that the Polish question must be negotiated without force or the threat of it, and that should Polish territory be violated by Germany then Britain would feel bound to honour her guarantee to Poland. All will then depend on Hitler's next move. Will he continue to parlay or is his patience exhausted? Barry thinks that the terms of the British note to Hitler have also been sent to Franlkin D. Roosevelt for his information. There has been much speculation in London as to the identity and mission of a person who arrived and left in a veil of secrecy in a plane from Germany yesterday. Barry says there is little hard news apart from the following: the terms of a note from Daladier to Hitler and the reply have been published. Hitler rejected a French promise to act as guarantor of Polish/German negotiations. Germany has renounced claims to Alsace-Lorraine and has instanced the building of the Siegfried Line. Barry contends that Germany seems to be trying to detach either Britain or France (or both) from Poland by making concessions to them and guaranteeing friendship. The British Admiralty has taken control of the British merchant fleet. War preparations are taking place, such as painting white lines down the middle of main roads to aid travel in dim light and a rehearsal evacuation of London County Council school-children. Airplane crews have been sleeping under their aircraft in a state of preparedness. Nevertheless, the British public seems unperturbed. In Berlin, preparations have been going on for war. The last reservists have been called up. There are no brass bands or banners as in 1914. Until Friday there had been no serious negotiations between Germany and Poland, but Warsaw is calm and unyielding. Isvestia has printed an interview with Marshal Voroshilov, in which he states that in the event of war between Germany and Poland, Russia would feel free to supply arms and supplies to Poland, the Russo-German pact notwithstanding. Berry concludes with the guess that if Germany, as in the past, can gain its ends by "fear diplomacy" it will not go to war. <14mn>
