Phaneuf, Jean-Marc, 1952- : Jean-Marc Phaneuf est caricaturiste éditorialiste, bédéiste, illustrateur, et auteur de romans historiques.
En tant que caricaturiste, il a publié environ 6 000 dessins dans une trentaine de publications. Aujourd'hui, la plupart de ses oeuvres sont regroupées dans deux fonds d'archives, l'un à Bibliothèque et Archives du Canada et l'autre à Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec.
Né au Québec en 1952, Jean-Marc Phaneuf fait ses études collégiales au Cégep du Vieux-Montréal de 1970 à 1973 où il obtient un diplôme d'études collégiales en ARTS APPLIQUÉS graphisme. Étudiant à temps plein, il amorce sa carrière de bédéiste et de caricaturiste sous le pseudonyme de Marko, avant de griffer Phaneuf à partir de 1977. Dès 1971 et durant plus de deux ans, il collabore aux magazines Proscope (lectorat masculin) et Vivre (lectorat féminin) où il publie les BD La légende de Crépus et Vivre avec lui. On lui accorde alors deux pages dans chacune de ces publications.
De 1971 à 1973, il publie aussi ses premières caricatures éditoriales dans l'Oeil régional; puis en 1974 dans le Courrier du Sud, La Patrie et Le Petit Journal, occasionnellement dans les quotidiens Le Jour et Le Devoir.
Au printemps 1976, Phaneuf publie quelques dessins éditoriaux sur les ondes de Télé-Métropole, dans le segment Commentaire animé par Gilles Deschênes, à l'intérieur du 10 vous informe.
D'avril 1979 à septembre 1980, sa collaboration au quotidien Le Devoir s'intensifie où il publie jusqu'à trois dessins par semaine. Plusieurs de ces dessins seront regroupés dans un recueil de caricatures intitulé PHANEUF vs PHANEUF, dont la préface sera signée par Marc Laurendeau, ex-membre des Cyniques, journaliste et analyste politique.
Phaneuf rêvait d'introduire une caricature éditoriale dans un bulletin d'information télévisé. Après une tentative avortée par la grève de Télé-Métropole de 1976, il récidive en 1980 et 1981 à l'intérieur des Nouvelles TVA où il produit des caricatures éditoriales animées (dessin, son et mouvement) à raison de trois par semaine. Cette expérience s'avère une première dans un bulletin de nouvelles, avant d'être reprise par d'autres réseaux.
De 1982 à 1999, toujours à la pige, il est le caricaturiste attitré des hebdomadaires Les Affaires et Le Courrier du Sud.
De décembre 1987 à juillet 1990, sous la nouvelle direction de Benoit Lauzière, Phaneuf retourne au quotidien Le Devoir en tant que caricaturiste pigiste attitré. Ses caricatures ne laisseront personne indifférent. Cependant, l'équipe éditoriale, incluant son caricaturiste, sera remplacée lors du changement de direction de 1990.
En 1986, il monte l'exposition Humour noir en couleurs consacrée au montage photographique satirique. Cet événement est bien accueilli par le public, les médias et la critique. Les retombées se soldent par des publications régulières : Les Phaneufolies dans TV Hebdo et Les Pellicules de Phaneuf dans Télé 7 Jours. Dans ces deux publications, il publie également trois dessins d'humour social par semaine sur le thème de la télévision; de 1992 à 1996 dans Télé 7 Jours et de 1998 à 2006 dans TV Hebdo.
En 2001, Phaneuf quitte Le Courrier du Sud pour le journal Le Point Sud. Douze mois plus tard, la rédaction ayant changé, le caricaturiste revint au Courrier du Sud jusqu'à la fin de 2018.
Phaneuf publia un album de bandes dessinées à compte d'auteur, ainsi que quatre recueils de dessins éditoriaux, dont deux aux Éditions Stanké.
En 2019, devant la précarité des médias et de la liberté de presse en régression, Phaneuf se tourne vers le web où il publie au quotidien sur VraisMoutons.com, Facebook et Twitter, ainsi que trois fois la semaine dans L'aut'journal.
Parallèlement à sa carrière de caricaturiste pigiste, de décembre 1974 à décembre 2015, il sera illustrateur à temps plein pour le Groupe TVA où il concevra, réalisera ou supervisera plusieurs ouvertures d'émissions d'information et de divertissement, ainsi que leur habillage graphique.
Jean-Marc Phaneuf est aussi un passionné d'histoire. De 1998 à 2018, il consacre des milliers d'heures à la recherche historique. Scrutant l'Amérique septentrionale de la fin du XVIIe - début du XVIIIe, il dédiera ses travaux aux victimes des guerres coloniales, plus précisément aux « esclaves blancs ». Il publia une quinzaine d'ouvrages sur le sujet, allant du compte rendu aux romans historiques. Dès 2002, Mathias, Une histoire vraie, écrit, illustré et publié par l'auteur, est très populaire dans les écoles du Québec et du Canada pour intéresser les jeunes à l'histoire. En 2003, cet album concept de 52 pages fait l'objet d'un livre audio chez Coffragants Éditions, puis d'une traduction anglaise en 2004.
De 2006 à 2008, toujours dans le roman historique, Jean-Marc Phaneuf publie chez Trécarré jeunesse, la série Jean du Pays. Destinés aux adolescents et jeunes adultes, en 2008, ces livres sont distribués en Europe. En 2009, le troisième tome de cette trilogie, Jean du Pays, Que le spectacle commence, lui vaut le prix Percy-W.-Foy, prestigieuse récompense décernée par la Société historique de Montréal pour souligner l'approche et le contenu historique de cette série jeunesse. De 2001 à 2013, Jean-Marc Phaneuf fut invité comme conférencier par plusieurs écoles, sociétés historiques, universités et musées dont à deux reprise à Pointe-à-Callière, sur le rôle des «Esclaves blancs» dans l'histoire du Québec.
