The fonds is organized into the following series: Correspondence and Subject files, Disc lists-Northwest Territories/Nunavut; Eskimo Identification lists, Arctic disk lists (James Bay) (Northern Quebec/Nunavik), Inuit Cooperatives - Minutes; Inuit Cooperatives - reports and By laws. Also included are records of the Canadian Arctic producers, the Canadian Eskimo Arts Council, the Inuit Tapirisat and the Department of Indian and Northern Development. The fonds consists of correspondence, reports, statistical data lists (many compiled by the RCMP), minutes and agendas.

Inuit Art Foundation : The Inuit Art Foundation was established in 1985. It is the only aboriginal arts service organized in Canada. A national non-profit organization, the foundation is controlled entirely by practicing Inuit artists. Its mandate is to assist Inuit artists in the development of their professional skills and the marketing and promotion of their art.

Through the Inuit Artists' College, the foundation provides education and professional development opportunities for artists from across the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik and Labrador. Operating as a university without walls, the college organizes regional and cross-cultural workshops as well as providing educational and other resource material to artists.

Also run by the foundation is the Inuit Art Services, which includes arranging copyright permissions, negotiating artist's fees, as well as event planning and coordination.

The foundation's publication "Inuit Art Quarterly", published since 1986, is the only magazine dedicated to the art of the Inuit.

Offering a full range of Inuit arts and crafts, the foundation's non-profit Inuit Artists' Shop serves to generate revenue for the foundations's many programs and as a training site for students and visiting artists wanting to learn about retailing and curating Inuit art.

General note:

The records were donated to the National Archives in June 2005, by Dr. Marybelle Mitchell, executive director of the Inuit Art Foundation.

The information on the provenance of the dics lists is from an email exchange between LAC and Marybelle Mitchell in September 2009.

Custodial history:

Never used by the Inuit Art Foundation, the disc lists were acquired by A. Barry Roberts during the course of some contract work he did for Indian and Northern Affairs. Recognizing the value of these lists, he gave them to Marybelle Mitchell, Executive Director of the IAF, for safekeeping. The IAF kept them for several years before deciding that it made more sense to transfer them to the archives with their records. Barry, who has since died, agreed. A well known person in the field, A. Barry Roberts is the author of the report : "Eskimo Identification and Disc Numbers: A Brief History", Ottawa, Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, 1975, 34 pages.
