From the interview with Chris Turner discussing a development of energy efficient homes: "[...] Net-energy-producing housing. [...] this functional, recognizable, easily replicable collection of 58 middle-class townhouses that produce more energy than they consume. [...] I met someone who's lived in one of these houses and said, "Oh no, we would get a credit instead of a bill frequently at the end of the month from our power company." [...] Well the thing is, which makes them so encouraging, is that they're really pretty standard. I mean, they function like any other house. They've got solar panels on the roof, but as we increasingly are learning about sort of radical moves to sustainability, it has less to do with how you generate the energy and much more with how careful you are about using it. And so what they are is really, really smart passive solar design, which is basically just to say they take as much heat as possible, as much light as possible from the sun, so that when they actually need to go to their sort of artificial heating and lighting and other systems, they don't need them near as much. And then yes-you have a bank of solar panels on the roof and that sort of thing. But really what it is, more than anything, is incredibly efficient, really frugal design."

Chris Turner is a journalist, best-selling author, and a sought after public speaker. His determination to find tangible solutions to climate change has injected new hope into the environmental movement.

Chris was born in 1973 in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, into a military family. He has lived in the Canadian North, the American Midwest, Germany, and India. Chris studied history at Queen's University in Kingston Ontario, and journalism at Ryerson, but his obsession with culture and technology led him to Shift Magazine, one of the more influential Canadian magazines of the 1990s. He started there as an intern but stayed on after his 1998 graduation from Ryerson until 2003.
