From the interview with David Hughes: "The paradigm that we're involved in is a growth paradigm. The economists basically have to have continuous growth, and that's the paradigm that we're operating under, which is a totally and completely unsustainable paradigm if we live in a finite world, which we do. And we've succeeded in bumping up against the ecological and energy-resource limitations of the planet. You know, for geological and ecological reasons.

"My thinking is we have to realize that the growth paradigm is very close to an end. It's unsustainable. Ideally, for sustainability we need at the very minimum a steady state paradigm, so that we operate without growth. Unfortunately, we've overshot the ecological ability of the planet to sustain us. And therefore we're very likely looking at a descent paradigm. So we have to look at likely decades of managed descent to get down to some level that's more sustainable."

From The Green Interview website: J. David Hughes was raised in Edmonton, Alberta and trained in geology at the University of Alberta. He has spent nearly four decades in the energy sector, including 32 years with the Geological Survey of Canada as a scientist and research manager, where he published extensively on energy and hydrocarbon resource issues in the scientific literature. Now retired from the GSC, he heads his own consulting company specializing in global energy and sustainability. Dave Hughes developed Canada's National Coal Inventory, and oversaw the publication of the Canadian Gas Potential Committee's most recent review of Canada's unconventional gas potential.
