The work is a head and shoulders facing portrait of Wilfrid Laurier, approximately 40 years old (1841-1919). The sitter is depicted wearing a jacket and tie with his head turned slightly to the viewer's right. \\\ This artwork appears to be the earliest painting representing Wilfrid Laurier. Indeed, a second portrait of Laurier will be painted by Forbes in 1893, while those painted by William S. Taggart (1906), Suzor Cote (1909), Georges Delfosse (ca 1910) and John W. Russell (1913, 1915 and 1919) were painted during and after Sir Wilfrid Laurier's term as Prime Minister.

Custodial history:

This painting was offered to Library and Archives Canada by the Rt Hon. Paul Martin, who inherited it from his father, the Rt Hon. Paul Martin. It has been impossible to establish the circumstances by which Paul Martin Sr. has acquired this painting. However, it is well known that Mr. Martin Sr. greatly admired Sir Wilfrid Laurier. This painting decorated the office of Paul Martin Jr. while he was Prime Minister.

It is also interesting to note that this 1885 painting most likely originated from a photograph of Wilfrid Laurier taken around 1882 by the Topley Studio (see Mikan #3218139, ecopy number a013133-v8). The pose, hair and clothing details, as well as the brooch worn by Laurier in this photograph are precisely the same as in the painting.
