The fonds consists of the records of the Canadian Council of Library Schools, including chronological files, nominal files for some of the presidents, and subject files. The chronological files were created by the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto, which served as its secretariat, and which compiled annual files, 1971 to 1992. These include correspondence of the presidents and other members, minutes and agendas of meetings, annual reports of the library schools, records of relationships with other organizations, statistical surveys, research reports, and studies related to education and librarianship, and graduate placements and salaries.

The nominal files hold the correspondence of the president while leading the council (and perhaps while they filled other roles on the executive) and related material. There are files for Basil Stuart-Stubbs (1982-1986), John Wright (1986-1987), Mary Dykstra (1987-1989), Jean Tague (1989-1991), and J. Andrew Large (1991). The subject files relate to specific projects or issues, including the constitution and by-laws; organizing a lecture tour of Canada by Blaise Cronin; cooperation with China; the implications for the library profession of the federal government's Public Service (PS) 2000 initiative; and the accreditation of Canadian library schools by the American Library Association (ALA).

There is one photograph of a joint meeting of the council with the Canadian Association of Research Libraries in Saskatoon, 9 June 1982.

Canadian Council of Library Schools : The Canadian Council of Library Schools was formed in Ottawa in November 1971 to create a forum for Canada's then eight graduate library schools to discuss high-level issues of common concern, primarily related to administration rather than issues related to teaching and curriculum. Its membership included the dean or director and one faculty member from each school. If not already a member of the council, the president of the Canadian Association of Library Schools would sit as a non-voting member.

The objectives of the council were to be the official voice of Canadian graduate library schools as an affiliate of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada; to encourage cooperation and coordination among library schools; to maintain close liaison with the Canadian Association of Library Schools in promoting the improvement of graduate library education; to share information on library education; and to liaise with other organizations inside and outside of Canada.
