What should you look for when you're buying commercially frozen foods? First of all you should know that every open-type commercial freezer has a lead line no foods should be stored above this line. There should also be a temperature gauge which should read 10F or below. If the temperature is too high or the frozen food is piled above the load line the quality of the frozen food will be lowered. Remember you pay as much for poor quality as you do for top quality produce. As well as this, you should look for evidence of thawing. If you see ice crystals or snow in or on the package or you could assume that they've probably thawed and have been refrozen. The vegetables in a bag should be free running. The box or bag that contains the food should riot be torn or crushed. The consumer too, has to do her part in keeping frozen foods in top quality. Leave frozen foods last on the grocery list and see that they are well wrapped in an insulated bag at the store. If you're buying any packages on a hot day it might be a good idea to take along your picnic cooler to keep them as cold as possible until you get home. Make sure your freezer at home is registering 0 or lower because at this temperature most foods will keep as long at a year. If you feel that the freezer storage in your local supermarket is not as good as it should be you should voice your complaint to the store manager. Unfortunately to this date there is no legislation controlling freezer storage in the stores. There was a voluntary agreement set up between processor, transport, distributors and retailers in the early 1960s which if followed insures the consumer a top quality product.
