I was reading the other day that the first recorded occasion of the appearance of ice cream was at an elaborate banquet given by the English King Charles the First around 1640. The dessert was such a surprise and success that Charles called in the cook and ordered him to keep the recipe as a secret forever. To prove that he was serious, the king pensioned off this cook for a generous sum. However, the cook didn't keep his word and ice cream became a popular, if at first strictly luxurious speciality. It's a good thing for us that the cook did decide to give his secret away. Ice cream is so very versatile. It can be used as is or combined in many delicious ways. One of my very favorite ways of using ice cream is to make ice cream sodas. To make strawberry or raspberry ice cream sodas put about 1/3 of a cup of fresh or frozen crushed and sweetened berries in a tall glass, add to this 1/4 cup of milk and a large scoop of ice cream. Fill the glass with chilled soda water, stir and serve. The kiddies will love it and so will the adults. Try your favorite fruit and ice cream and sip sodas on the next hot summer day. <1mn 29s>
