This sub-series consists of photographs taken by George Hollifield during Robert Peary's sixth expedition to the Arctic in the summer of 1896.

Hollifield, George, 1872-1927 : George Hollifield was born November 5th, 1872 in Wales. He immigrated to Canada around 1886 and settled in Baddeck, Cape Breton, where he married Jessie Anderson (1876-1956). Both he and his wife were domestic workers in the home of Benjamin Hoppin (1851-1923), a retired Yale scientist from New Haven, Connecticut.

In 1896, Hollifield accompanied Hoppin as a photographer on R.E. Peary's Arctic Expedition. The American artist Albert Operti as well as another photographer from Baddeck named Alexander Hugh Sutherland were also aboard to document the trip.

Hollifield and his wife remained in the service of Hoppin after the expedition and likely until Hoppin's death on June 2, 1923. Hollifield was the Commodore of the Bras d'Or Yacht Club in Baddeck from 1918 to 1926. He passed away in Baddeck on January 19th, 1927.

Custodial history:

The photographs that make up this sub-series were originally part of the National Film Board's Superintendent W.G. Fraser (RCMP) Collection. Supt. Fraser worked in the north as head of the RCMP's Artic division for many years.
