Audio recording of a lecture given by Tomson Highway entitled "Education = Understanding = Freedom" sponsored by the U of Regina's President's Committee On Racial Harassment. Opening remarks given by member of the Commitee, who discusses the set-up of the Indian Cultural Centre in London, Ont.and the arrival of Tomson Highway and his work there. (At 3 minutes 17s), Highway starts his lecture by prensenting and playing on piano a musical piece from his cabaret "Rose". Highway then presents his challenges as Native playwrights. He explains his Rez sisters play cycle. He presents his most recent production (Rose), produced in Toronto after ten years of trying to raise the funds to put the show on, the difficulty of having to produce his plays with only Native actors, the arrival of a representative of the University of Toronto who decided to have the third year acting students to perform the show, the challenges of having non-Natives play Natives roles the development of respect by Non-Natives of Native culture through the show. Highway then discusses his background, his Northern Manitoba childhood, half Cree and half Chppewan (Dene) culture, the respect of both cultures and the importance of learning each language, his apprentiship of the English language at boarding school (The Pas), then his subsequent learning of the French language in Montreal where he noticed that several generations of English Montrealers did still not learn the Franch language (which he finds a shame). Highway underlines the importance of learning several languages and speaking the language of the country one visits. The recording ends with a question and answer period concerning Quebec independance, the importance of learning English and French to keep the country together. <44 min 30 s>
