Jamaican-born Keith Hoilett is the temporary Director. The 45-year-old Hoilett was educated in Jamaica and Canada and acted as assistant Crown Attorney in Toronto before joining the Ombudsman staff at its inception in 1975. Mr. Hoilett will act as temporary Ombudsman for a period of up to six months or until a full.-time Director is appointed. Ontario's Ombudsman has exclusive jurisdiction over provincial matters and was fashioned after offices such as those found in Sweden and New Zealand which are based on the concept of parliamentary democracy. Offices such as the Ontario Ombudsman are also found in Ghana, Trinidad and Jamaica. Carlo Liconti asked Mr. Hoilett to explain exactly what the Ombudsman is. IN: It's one of the...
