United States Ambassador to Canada David Wilkins addresses a joint meeting of the Canadian Club of Toronto and the Empire Club. He talks about his experiences travelling around Canada and learning from the Canadian people, and states that he feels very privileged to be in his position. He has spent a great deal of time thinking about the U.S.-Canada relationship since he became Ambassador, and observes that the media usually doesn't reflect how strong and close the relationship really is. Often small disagreements get very distorted because the relationship is so close that it is taken for granted. There is a need, however, to re-examine the fabric of the relationship, because it is fraying a bit at the edges. He thanks Canada for all it did in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, says Canada has a lot to be proud of, and argues that because Canada and the U.S are two different but functional democracies, the focus should be on the positive aspects of the relationship. He emphasizes the importance of taking U.S. and Canadian security seriously, and working together to combat terrorism. In regard to border concerns, both countries want, and must work together to achieve, prosperity and security, which are not mutually exclusive. He also discusses the softwood lumber issue, states that the U.S. remains committed to NAFTA, and expresses confidence that the trade dispute can be resolved without retaliation. Gun violence is an issue Canadians are rightly concerned about, but the U.S. is not as much to blame for it as has been claimed, and law enforcement in both countries are working together to tackle the problem. Wilkins comments on Canadian and American involvement in foreign affairs, and provides examples of how the U.S. is a force for good in the world. He concludes by saying that although anti-American rhetoric has some people, both in Canada and the U.S., concerned about the U.S.-Canada relationship, in reality neither country has a better friend, and he is committed to making this great relationship even greater.
