This episode of Headline Politics, hosted by Peter Van Dusen, features NDP leader Jack Layton speaking to reporters after the conclusion of the NDP's three day caucus meeting. Much of the discussion during the caucus meeting was focussed on the timing of the next election. In the past the NDP had supported the Liberal minority government, which promised to call an election in the spring of 2006. The Conservative Party, however, wanted the NDP's support in order to defeat the Liberal government and hold an election in the fall of 2005. Layton tells reporters that while many Canadians seem to recognize and appreciate the work the NDP did on the 2005 federal budget, they also feel that the country is adrift and in difficulty because of a lack of leadership. Trade with the United States, increasing healthcare privatization, pollution, and training and post-secondary education are all issues that Canadians want to see the federal government deal with more actively. In the fall, the NDP plans to put forward specific initiatives regarding these issues to all of Parliament, not just the Liberal Party, in order to provoke positive action from all the parties. <21mn>
