A project was undertaken to improve present knowledge of ridge modelling and to investigate preferred techniques for the production of model ice ridges. The general approach for the production used for the project was to attempt to simulate, at model scale, a small number of field ridge ramming events that were relatively well documented. After a review of the available full scale data, it was decided to use field data collected during ramming tests with the USCGC Polar Star in 1982 in the Bering Sea in partially consolidated first-year ridges as the reference event(s) for this study. Preliminary model tests were first conducted by Fleet Technology Limited's ice tank in Kanata. More extensive tests were then conducted at the Institute of Marine Dynamics in St. John's, NFLD. Tests were conducted at a scale factor of 19.1. Two ridge modelling techniques were used: i.e. the production of a single ridge with both a consolidated and an unconsolidated portion; and the production of ridges which separately modelled the unconsolidated and consolidated portions of the ridge. Parameters that were varied during the tests included the ice-model friction factor, the size of the ridge, and the size and strength of the consolidated layer of the ridge. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made regarding the accuracy of ridge modelling techniques and the preferred techniques for the production of ice model ridges.
