This series covers the period from formation of the partnership styled the Robert Reford Company in 1876 to the late 1980s. These files relate to the Robert Reford Company's activities as a shipping agency. Robert Reford's death in 1913 led to a post-war reorganization of the Company in 1919. Reford's agency not only provided support for these two shipping lines in Montréal, Reford himself and the Company owned shares in the steamers. Refords involvement with Donaldsons and Thomsons lead to the Robert Reford Company becoming part of the Cunard Steamship network. In 1911 Cunard purchased a controlling interest in the Cairn Line. Through its subsidiary Anchor Line, Cunard took over Donaldson's Canadian passenger service in 1916.

Led by a third generation member of the family, Lewis Eric Reford, the company began almost from scratch to rebuilt the business. Eric Reford energetically pushed the old firm in new directions. Strategically he concentrated on new and growing markets.

With the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959 the Company was forced to look for ways to take advantage of this opportunity. The decision was made in the spring of 1960 to represent Jadranska Slobodna Plovidba (the Yugoslav Great Lakes Line). The container revolution which began in the Port of Montréal in the late 1960s led not only to a major change in the handling of cargo it forced adjustments to the role of traditional shipping agencies.
