The sketchbook contains drawings and sketches of landscapes and portraits in Northern France and Belgium including such locations as Calais, Dunkirk, Lille, Malonne, Namur, and other unnamed or undecipherable locations. The pen and ink drawings are finely rendered as are some of the pencil drawings, There are many pencil sketches only partially completed. In addition there are manuscript entries, notes in French about military bombardment, drawing instructions in English, a list of German names, French names and addresses, and a partial itinerary of the medical unit's travels from 9 September 1916 to 2 February 1918. Accompanying the sketchbook is a textual record, a Railway Warrant for Journeys in the United Kingdom form, filled out, signed, and stamped, dated 14 April 1919.

Note on the state of conservation:

The leather binding is scratched, worn, and dog eared. There is partial separation of pages from the binding. Some of the pencil drawings are badly smudged.

Custodial history:

The sketchbook was kept by the Reverend George R.B. Kinney (1872-1961) to record his time as a stretcher bearer in France in the First World War. It remained in the family after his passing and was donated by Trina McDonald, George Kinney's great-granddaughter.
