McLachlin, Beverley M, 1943- : Beverley McLachlin est née le 7 septembre 1943 à Pincher Creek, en Alberta. Elle étudie à l'Université de l'Alberta, où elle obtient un baccalauréat ès arts (avec distinction) en philosophie en 1965, puis une maîtrise en philosophie et un baccalauréat en droit en 1968. Admise au Barreau de l'Alberta en 1969 et au Barreau de la Colombie-Britannique en 1971, elle fait ses débuts au cabinet Wood, Moir, Hyde & Ross à Edmonton en 1969. En 1971, après avoir déménagé à Fort St. John, en Colombie-Britannique, elle se joint au cabinet Thomas, Herdy, Mitchell & Co., puis au cabinet Bull Houser Tupper, à Vancouver, où elle exerce le droit de 1972 à 1975. De 1974 à 1981, Mme McLachlin travaille aussi comme professeure agrégée à la faculté de droit de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique.
En avril 1981, elle est nommée juge à la Cour du comté de Vancouver, et en septembre de la même année, à la Cour suprême de la Colombie-Britannique. Quatre ans plus tard, Mme McLachlin est promue au poste de juge à la Cour d'appel de la Colombie-Britannique, devenant ainsi la première femme à posséder ce titre. En 1988, elle devient également la première femme à accéder au poste de juge en chef de la Cour suprême de cette province.
Sept mois plus tard, en avril 1989, elle est nommée juge à la Cour suprême du Canada par le premier ministre Brian Mulroney. C'est la troisième femme à obtenir cet honneur après Bertha Wilson et Claire L'Heureux-Dubé. Onze ans s'écoulent, puis le premier ministre Jean Chrétien en fait la 17e juge en chef de cette cour le 7 janvier 2000. Elle devient ainsi la première femme à accéder au poste de juge en chef d'une haute cour d'un pays du Commonwealth. Elle est aussi la personne qui a occupé le plus longtemps le poste de juge en chef de la Cour suprême du Canada.
Après avoir été assermentée à la Cour suprême du Canada, elle a devenu aussi suppléante de la gouverneure générale du Canada au même titre que les autres juges de la Cour suprême.
Elle était présidente du Conseil canadien de la magistrature, du conseil consultatif de l'Ordre du Canada, et du Conseil des gouverneurs de l'Institut national de la magistrature. Elle est membre du Conseil privé de la Reine pour le Canada.
Beverley McLachlin a pris sa retraite de la cour le 15 décembre 2017.
