This series contains addresses, communications, presentations and speeches given by Jean-Pierre Wallot since the early 1960s. It also includes scientific and professional communications related to the fields of history and archives. Each record from 1985 to 1996 inclusive, during which Mr. Wallot was the National Archivist of Canada, contains a list of the speeches given.
Under the auspices of the National Archives of Canada, the documents in this series relate specifically to planning activities, meetings with staff, activities of the cultural, communications and heritage committees in collaboration with other federal government bodies, and the preparation of annual reports. There are also comments made during the opening of exhibits and the signing of agreements with donors, and many greetings. This series also includes speeches to numerous organizations, such as the Association des archivistes du Québec (AAQ), the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA), the Canadian Council of Archives (CCA), the Society of American Archivists (SAA), the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA), and also the Canadian Historical Association (CHA) and the Royal Society of Canada (RSC).
In addition to addresses and speeches, this series of documents contains a number of scientific texts, including "Les habitants de Montréal et de Québec (1790-1835)"; "Une spectrographie des genres de vie dans la société rurale bas-canadienne (1792-1835)"; "Évolution et éclatement du monde rural"; "Le Bas-Canada au tournant du 19e siècle : restructuration et modernisation"; "La Révolution française à travers les écrits historiques canadiens, du 19e siècle à la seconde guerre mondiale"; "Les inventaires après-décès," given at the Université de Rennes; "La Révolution française, le Canada et les Droits de l'Homme," presented at Arles as part of the Congrès France-Canada "L'archivistique et l'histoire orale. Bilan d'un quart de siècle de réflexion méthodologique et de travaux." This series also contains presentations to the International Council on Archives (ICA), including at international conferences held in Montréal (1992) and Beijing (1996); "Les Archives nationales du Canada et l'aide à la recherche en archivistique" (1990) to the Groupe d'intervention et de recherche en archivistique (GIRA); "La normalisation des pratiques archivistiques aux Archives nationales du Canada" and "Free Trade in Archival Ideas: the Canadian Perspective on North American Archival Development" to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA); and "Les grands principes internationaux concernant les migrations des archives" presented in Roanne, France.
There are scientific and professional presentations to the Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS), the Canadian Historical Association (CHA) (including his 1983 speech as president), the Society of American Archivists (SAA), the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA), the Association des archivistes du Québec (AAQ), Statistics Canada as president of the Royal Society of Canada and visiting professor at the Institute of Canadian Studies (1999), and to the University of Ottawa as visiting professor at the Institute of Canadian Studies and former National Archivist (1999). Speeches given at the National Archives of Canada relate to the National Archives of Canada Act (1987), the Friends of the National Archives, the opening of the Preservation Centre in Gatineau, the respective retirements of Terry Cook and Françoise Houle, and his departure speech from the National Archives of Canada in June 1987. There are also speeches and addresses from current and new members at a reception of the Académie des lettres du Québec (2003).
This series also includes honours received by Jean-Pierre Wallot, including honorary doctorates from the Université de Rennes (1987) and the University of Ottawa, and his recognition as a member emeritus of ACFAS.
