It was the fusion of the main fascist movements active in Canada in the 1930s, notably the National Social Christian Party of Quebec and the Canadian nationalist party in Ontario and the Prairies. Adrien Arcand was appointed leader of the new Party during the congress. In June 1940, the Party was prohibited by order-in-council 2363. Several of its members, including its leader Adrien Arcand, were interned for various periods of time. The Party never really recovered from this ban. It was quiet during the war. After the conflict, the members made the headlines on a few occasions. They have been involved in actions such as sending antisemitic pamphlets to several MPs. Adrien Arcand was candidate for the National Unity Party for the 1949 and 1953 federal elections. He arrived second on each occasion. The National Unity Party was rather inactive after Arcand's death, but continued to publish a journal until 2001.
