The files in this accession come from the 7667 block of the DND Central File Classification System and document incident, damage and investigation reports for fires which occurred to military property, on military bases, or RCN ships in both Canada and overseas, including United Nations deployments. These records document individual fires occurring throughout the Canadian military as well as annual reports compiled by various area commands summarising the damage caused by fires to DND property for which they were responsible. Many of the files in this accession were assigned an alpha-numeric tertiary (eg. S45/1) which identified the DND site at which a fire took place. These tertiary identifiers can be checked against the DND master list of geographic codes. Other records in this accession were not assigned a geographic identifier, and so they must be ordered by date on which a particular fire took place.

The Canadian Forces Fire Marshal (CFFM), provides the Department of National Defence with policy and guidance for all fire protection, prevention, engineering, and environmental activities. These duties include inspecting, designing and maintaining fire protection systems, purchasing fire-fighting equipment, and providing specialised training for DND fire-fighters. The CFFM also represents fire-fighters in labour relations and union negotiations.
