This fonds consists of records related to the lives and careers of Margaret and John Stiles as diplomats in the Canadian foreign service. The records document their early lives and careers, as well as their military service, as they both served overseas during the Second World War. The records also include Margaret Stiles' diaries, which she wrote in throughout the majority of her adult life. Records related to John's diplomatic postings include mainly correspondence and photographs, which document their daily lives and important events that occurred throughout their long career. Finally, this fonds includes family records related to both the Stiles and Buckley families.

The fonds is divided into four series: Early life, Diaries, Diplomatic postings, and Family records. Some series are further divided into sub-series.

Stiles, Margaret and John A : John Stiles was born in 1918 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He attended the University of Toronto, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1941. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the Canadian Army and served overseas during the Second World War in England, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. Following the end of the war in 1945, Stiles joined the Trade Commissioner Service, where he began his international career in New York as Assistant Trade Commissioner and Vice Consul.

Margaret Celia Buckley was born in 1918 in Ottawa. In 1942, Margaret enlisted in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS). She was trained in communications and was stationed overseas in London, England. During the war, Margaret reached the rank of Lieutenant. After the war, Margaret worked as a staff member for Lester B. Pearson, where she met John Stiles. The two married in 1948. As was required at the time, Margaret gave up her own Foreign Service career to support that of her husband.

In 1949, the couple was posted to Caracas, Venezuela. This was a tumultuous time in the country, marked by political assassinations and revolution. John and Margaret stayed in Venezuela for six years. John's other postings with the Trade Commissioner Service included: Bonn, Germany; Sydney, Australia; and Tokyo, Japan.

In 1970, John transferred to the Department of External Affairs and was soon posted to Guyana as High Commissioner. In 1974, John became the first resident Canadian Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. In 1977 he returned to Canada, where he spent the final years of his career at Mount Allison University, the Inspection Service of External Affairs, and finally the Public Service Commission.

In 1984, with the Korean Embassy, John helped establish a Canada-Korea Society to help promote a better understanding between the two countries. He served as president for nine years and remained on the executive until the fall of 1999. John Stiles died on January 9, 2000. Margaret Stiles died on May 9, 2015.
