The sub-series consists of records relating to John Ralston Saul's book, The Doubter's Companion: A Dictionary of Aggressive Common Sense, first published in 1994. Successive drafts of the manuscript document its development under working titles, "Dictionary of Future Attitudes", "A Doubter's Guide to Current Truths", and "The Doubter's Guide: A Dictionary of Common Sense for Unreasonable People". These include drafts edited by Adam Bellow of Penguin Books, manuscript additions and new entries for the "Dictionary", and page proofs with revisions. It also includes documents relating to the French and German editions, and corrections for revised editions.

The promotion of The Doubter's Companion and public response is revealed through development of the cover design, catalogue and jacket copies, press releases, ads, flyers, and assembled reviews and articles about the book. There are reviews in publications from Germany, Sweden, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, and longer articles in Diewilt, Tribune de Genève, and the Utne Reader. The sub-series also holds Saul's research files, including quotes, notes and clippings organized alphabetically by dictionary entry, showing the development of each term included in the book.
