The fonds consists of Jean Milner's diaries, and related material, primarily photographs, clippings, and letters inserted in the diaries. She and her husband moved in Toronto's cultural, academic and legal circles, whose members are often referred to in her diaries. Their friends included literary editor William Toye, poet and constitutional theorist F. R. Scott, artist Marian Scott, poet Miriam Waddington, business executive G. Raleigh Parkin, and Chief Justice Bora Laskin, among many others. But her diaries also reveal her passion for horses and photography, and her scientific research. Through their completeness and length, they document the changes in Canadian society over eight decades, particularly from an educated woman's perspective. In her later years, she recorded her declining health and aging (she was invalided her last few years) in diary entries to which she brought a medical researcher's careful observation of her own experiences and condition.

The diary entries are complemented by clippings, photographs, and letters, which are often appended or enclosed with a particular day, but which sometimes were placed at the front or back of the diary. Some of her most frequent correspondents included Frank Scott and her brother Christopher Pratt. There are also several travel diaries of her trips to Sicily, Peru, India and Nepal, Mexico, and other places.

Milner, Jean, 1919-2014 : Jean Milner (nee Pratt) was a scientist and diarist. She was born in Okotoks, Alberta in 1919, the daughter of Harold and Margaret (Bridge) Pratt, and raised in Victoria, BC. She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Master of Science in Agriculture in 1942, and began working as a nutritionist at the Dominion Experimental Farm in Ottawa. There she met James Bryce Milner, who was working at the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, and they married in 1945. She worked as a lab assistant at Dalhousie University, where he was a professor of law, and after he went to the University of Toronto in 1957, she became a researcher in the Faculty of Medicine there. J. B. Milner was an expert in town planning law and a human rights activist, who died at age 51 in 1969. His name is commemorated by a park in the downtown Toronto neighbourhood where they lived on Collier Street. Pursuing her epidemiology research at the University of Toronto, she co-authored a text on the subject, "Epidemiology as Medical Ecology" (Edinburgh 1971). She was an avid equestrian, photographer, and diarist, keeping a personal diary from the age of fifteen in 1934 to a few weeks before her death on 21 November 2014, at age 95.
