The National Registration of 1940 was established by the federal government to direct the civilian labour force so as to meet the requirements of the war effort. Originally under the jurisdiction of the Deparment of National War Services, it was transferred to the Department of Labour in 1942 and became known as the National Selective Service.
This accession, a single file, consists chiefly of a 100 page typed manuscript entitled "Historical Record of the National Registration 1940", written in 1946 by H. Hereford of the Department of Labour. The remainder of the file consists of miscellaceous administrative records.
