Item consists of a black leather-bound diary, with gold-tooled:"DIARY 1853" on front cover, with an interior title as follows: "Marsh's Octavio Diary, or Daily Remembrancer, for 1853, Containing a Balnk for Every Day in the Year, For the Record of Interesting Events, Appointments, Bills Payable, Receivable, etc. etc." Boston: Published by John Marsh, Importer and Manufacturing Stationer, No. 77 Washington Street, Joys Building.

Diary contains sporadic handwritten entries for the entire year, with very detailed notes in the first few days of the year. Mentions the "Canadian Institute" in his first entry. Also contains some sketches and some accounting information.
