Item consists of a black leather-bound diary, with gold-tooled "SANDFORD FLEMING TORONTO, 1863" on front cover, with an interior title as follows:

Diary contains a pocket to place miscellaneous items.

Diary contains sporadic handwritten entries for the entire year. Fleming notes that he is in Craigleith on January 1, 1863. He notes that he is 36 years old on his birthday, January 7. On September 9, Fleming notes that Ministers Tilley and Tupper have informed him of his appointment to act as chief surveyor of a proposed route for the intercolonial railway linking the Canadas to the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

There are detailed financial accounts at the end of the diary for most months of the year, showing how much money Fleming spent and how much he had in the bank.

There are some loose items, including a receipt for a stay at the Russell's Hotel in Quebec City, a piece of blotting paper, a pressed leaf, and a small photograph.
