Item consists of a black leather-bound diary, with gold-tooled "SANDFORD FLEMING TORONTO, 1858" on front cover, with an interior title as follows: "Marsh's Long Octavio Diary, for 1858. Containing a Bank Space for Every Day in the Year, for the Record of Interesting Events, Etc Etc.. Also A Cash Account For Each Month, Bills Payable and Receivable, Etc Etc.", Boston: Published by John Marsh and Co., No. 77 Washington Street, Joy's Building.

Diary contains a pocket to place miscellaneous items.

Diary contains sporadic handwritten entries for the entire year. Fleming notes that he is in Collingwood, Ontario on January 1, 1857. On January 19-21, 1858 Fleming writes across a full page: Survey of Northwest Railway from Guelph to Elora and Fergus.There are detailed financial accounts at the end of the diary for each month of the year, showing how much money Fleming spent, how much he had in the bank, and how much money he had on his person (in hand or in pockets). There are a few additional loose items within the diary.
